Field Notes is a weekly, small-group field-day mini series designed for ongoing naturalist practices, ecological connection, and sensory activation.
Outdoor Play for the Local Naturalist
An ongoing weekly mini series on intersectional naturalism practices, compliments our monthly full-day wild immersion, Wild Lines.
Currently a minimum of one “dry” and one “wet” session held each moon
Logistics
Course length: 3-4 hrs
Location: Within 1 hr driving of LA central, announced week of
Dry: Land-based activity (come prepared to scramble/get dirty)
Wet: Water play and snorkeling involved, gear needed (see details below for rental/purchase options)
Themes: This is conditions-based naturalism, where experience follows ecology: Workshops are shaped by season, conditions and learning opportunity. Locations & themes are revealed the week of and focuses may range from navigation and species identification to movement-based play and storytelling - all as curated by mother earth
Themes & Learning Objectives
Read place in real time: Terrain, tide, ecosystems, microclimates
Meet the locals: Identify common & uncommon animals & plants
Food relationships: Food webs and wild-harvesting ethics
Play as embodiment: Activating the senses and anchoring body to land
Become a local steward: Ecological practices for the modern naturalist
Requirements
Cold-water comfort (applicable to “wet” sessions): Strong swimming is NOT required, but ability to relax in the ocean (occasionally surf/rocky entry) and self-manage equipment is
Freediving is optional (with proof of certification)
Hiking ability: NOT cardio-intensive hiking (heart rate >120) required, but ability to walk leisurely (street-market pace) up to 5 mi / 1500 ft in one day is expected

Great for: Ocean-comfortable folks (wet sessions), like hiking, open to multidisciplinary ways of interacting with ecology
(Wet Sessions) Not a fit if: Strong anxiety in water, need 1:1 support, mobility constraints

Included: Guided instruction, course materials, offerings & art supplies (where applicable)
Not included: Transportation, personal gear*
*Snorkeling/dive gear can be rented or purchased at discounted rates with one of our partners (additional info in packet upon booking)

Wet session basics: Mask/snorkel, wetsuit*, swim suit, fins, towel
Land basics: Hiking footwear, layers, sun/wind protection, snacks, water (3 liters)
Other: Journal, sitting blanket, choice of your art/craft/music medium
Info packet revealing location & preparation guide released at least a week in advance

Cancellation: Full refund a week before event, 50% refund before 48 hrs, no refunds within 48 hr window
Minimum enrollment: 4 participants required to conduct workshop (full refund or rescheduling if not met 5 days prior)
Courtesy coordination for carpooling is provided in packet upon booking (confirms 2-3 days prior)
Swim check: For wet sessions, proof of water proficiency required upon scheduling
